Hi, I have just received in the mail "Clinton Anderson's Horsemanship DownUnder". Does anyone out there had any dealings with his style of training good or bad. All the things I have read about him, plus flicking through this book, it appears that his methods are ok and work well.
Any Comments ??
I want to train my new QH, (probably re-training me ) so we can have trust in each other. I am thinking of applying Clinton's methods. Just as an FYI I am not planning on going full Western, cutting, tent pegging etc. All I want is to be able to do trail rides and enjoy my ride without having to fight with my Horse. As I have said I have only had him 1 week and so far he appears to be very responsive to voice commands.

When I wanted to learn more about being a better rider etc., I was told to pick one of the trainers out there and Clinton Anderson is really very good. I've met him, attended one of his clinics and he does really know what he is doing. I am even considering spending a lot of money to be trained for 3 days at one of his clinics and the nearest one to me is is WA, I live in Southern CA. He has a no BS type of approach that really does work, he's not mean, and he does not claim any fame for the techniques he uses, he's honestly very good. I've gotten a lot of advice from a lot of people and to tell you the truth Clinton Anderson's knowledge and training worked wonders with a 20 year old very bold mare. He knows horses and he knows people, he is a great communicator so if you are looking in the direction of a well known trainer, you cannot go wrong with him. He's easy to understand even with his accent, and he's honest.

I've only seen a couple of Clinton's videos but I agree with the others here. I have trouble with my 18 TB 'falling in' on circles, and using Clinton's methods of bending to create straightness and essentially teaching the horse to hold himself up without you doing all the work (something us english riders need to do more of!) I noticed an immediate difference. Unfortunately I haven't seen Clinton do any lunging, so I can't really help you there! I know when I've had horses that don't seem to 'get' lunging, all you can really do is try to keep circling around them to keep them circling around you, if you get what I mean. Eventually, they'll have to go forward because forward is what horses understand.

Hi guys, I always am pleased with your comments. I did some work with my Horse today. Using all of Clinton's ideas. All went very well, Mack is so responsive on the ground, however, there's always a however ( hee hee )..... I just for the life of me could not get him to lunge. I tried all hints etc from Clinton and a few ideas of my own. He would just NOT lunge. All he would do was spin around and look at me, I tried pushing him away, I tried in a round yard with no lead, I tried a string tied to lunge whip.... I tried everything. He just looked at me as if to say, what the hell you doing. Everything else on the ground with him was great. He disengaged both back and front quarters, he came he stayed, he did everything perfect except Lunge....
Any ideas ???.

I watch him on RFDTV all the time. I think that any of the natural horsemaship trainers are Great. What ever helps you gain Trust, respect and communication with your horses will only make you grow in your skills with horses. I am in the level 2 Parelli program and it is truelly amazing the changes in me and the relationship with my horses. You have made a truely positive move towards your success.
